Organization profile:
CNR-SPIN is a new born institute which includes four previous CNR-INFM structures. The headquarter is in Genoa, where the experimental activity of the unit will be carried out. CNR-SPIN possesses the skills and capability to support and carry out the management, coordination and financial administration of a European project. Indeed, within FP6, under its former name CNR-INFM successfully managed 53 Eu projects, 16 of which as coordinator. More information can be found at www.spin.cnr.it .


Leader:
Prof. Marina Putti (F) is Associate Professor at the University of Genoa and leader of the Superconductivity team (Responsabile di Commessa) of CNR-SPIN. Her scientific competences cover various fields of condensed matter physics such as thermal, electric and magnetic properties of superconducting and magnetic materials. She has played a leading role at the national and international level in the investigation of MgB2 and more recently on Fe-based superconductors. On these topics she was/is principal investigator of three National Projects, of two bilateral Italy-USA projects and is the team leader of FP6 IP “Hipermag”. She is the author of more than 150 publications in scientific journals and gave 15 invited talks (two plenary lectures) at conferences in the last 5 years.


Expertise:
CNR-SPIN researchers physicists and chemists and have a long tradition and competence in materials science, thin film deposition, superconducting tape and wire manufacturing, structural and chemical characterization by XRD, neutron diffraction and synchrotron radiation, thermal, transport and magnetic property measurements and muon spin spectroscopy.
 


Specific facilities:
The CNR-01 partner will make available to the project: 3 PLD deposition systems, AFM and LT-STM microscopes, SEM with EDX, a photolithographic laboratory, and a four circles x-rays diffractometer. The laboratory owns cryostats for thermal and transport property measurements in magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla and from 400 K down to 1 K, SQUID magnetometers up to 5 T and facilities for cold-working deformation. The CNR staff has wide access to European large scale facilities: i) European Magnetic Field Laboratory (EMFL), Grenoble (France), ii) European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), Grenoble (France); iii) neutron diffraction at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), Grenoble (France); iv) muon spectroscopy at the Paul Scherrer Institute(PSI), Zurich (Switzerland).

Super IronBased on the Exchange of Letters, JST and EC DG RTD have agreed to establish a new scheme for coordinated funding of Japanese-EU coordinated research projects (see European Community press release IP/09/1844). After consultations between JST and EC DG RTD, “Superconductivity” has been selected as the field of research for the coordinated funding scheme.
